What is Acrylic Face Mounting

28 April, 2013

Acrylic Face Mounting is a very popular and ultra modern way to present your photography or printed artwork. The process is basically taking a printed photo and applying a special clear double adhesive film to the image side of the photo (not the back). You then take a specially prepared piece of acrylic and apply the image side of the photo to it. So when viewing your photo you are looking at it through 4.5mm of acrylic. The look and effect will vary with the thickness of the acrylic, but regardless of thickness the effect is impressive.

The process is basically taking a printed photo and applying a special clear double adhesive film to the image side of the photo (not the back). You then take a specially prepared piece of acrylic, that us usually approx 4.5mm thick, but that can depend on size being used. (We use 4.5mm) You then apply the image side of the photo to the acrylic. So when viewing your photo you are looking at it through 4.5mm of acrylic. The look and effect will vary with the thickness of the acrylic, but regardless of thickness the effect is impressive.

Some things you need to know when selecting someone to facemount your photo.

1. The edge of the acrylic is usually polished. This gives the edge of the acrylic sheet being used for your photo a clear effects. This can be achieved either through a diamond polishing machine or done by hand with sanding and buffing the edge. Either way it is important to make sure the edge is prepared like this. It will add to the over quality and look of the final product.

2. Backing your acrylic with either an Aluminum sheet or something similar is essential. This is not so much to protect the photo, but to give the hanging system something secure to be glued too. The backing sheet will also stop any light passing through the acrylic which can look strange especially if the hanging system has been glued straight to the back of the photo. Which personally should be avoided as the glues maybe not react well with the photo paper over time and any light passing through the piece will show the hanging system clearly. This type of process of gluing the hanging system to the photo itself usually happens on smaller acrylics. But not here, we back everything no matter how small.

3. Correct mounting. Mounting any image to acrylic needs to be done under constant rolled pressure. We have seen people on YouTube facemount small images to blocks using their hand, up close that image will have many small bubbles and imperfections. Regardless of size it has to be roll mounted.
